Trystan's Favourite Stores
Cost-Plus
A glorified import store with lots of 'exotic' housewares, furniture, food stuffs, and some clothing. Always has tons of candles and candleholders in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and prices, plus many fancy pillows from tiny to floor-cushion type. And their linens and dishes come in everything from plain white or black to crazy prints. Pier One has similar merchandise, but is sometimes more expensive.
Newport News
Primarily a mainstream clothing catalog, but this company also sells a variety of home items. In the winter season, you'll find bedding, window coverings, and slipcovers in lush velvets, satins, and other exotic fabrics. Dark colors too. I've bought many home items here (including a black velvet comforter cover, black satin bedskirt, and burgundy embroidered floor pillow covers), and they're all decent quality for the price ($10-$150). Recommended!
Graveyard Fashions
Charming gothic items for around the home and garden. Artsy prints, dark candles and candleholders, hand-painted martini glasses (Swanky Goth, yeah!), Celtic and ankh knobs for your dresser or kitchen drawers, fireplace screens, and other lovely things ($5-$560).
Design Toscano
Expensive but high quality stone gargoyles (from desktop size to huge table bases), reproduction historical tapestries, ornate furniture, stone and metal candleholders, garden statuary, and other Gothic Medieval home decor ($20-$4,000+).
Domestications
Bedding, window coverings, slipcovers, and other housewares in a variety of patterns, colors, and styles. Some discounts, but mostly average prices. Always seems to have black sheet sets for $20-$60, also black curtains, towels, and blankets. Sometimes even has black furniture slipcovers.
Sure Fit Slipcovers
Can't sew your own slipcover? Then cover that old, ratty couch or chair with these slips. Wide variety of styles and colors at modest prices ($10-$160).
Victorian Trading Company
They specialize in Victorian-inspired paper products and fancy accessories like framed Victorian prints, picture frames, tea cups, candle holders, linens, desk items, and such ($12-$300).
Oriental Trading Company
Sells novelties and junk toys at wholesale prices. Of gothic interest are the votive candles (dozen for $2) and Halloween decorations like plastic skulls ($4), plastic skeletons ($10-$20), plastic bats (two dozen for $14), strings of skeleton lights ($7), and plastic glow-in-the-dark bead curtains ($8).
Goodwill
1579 Meridian Ave. at Hamilton
San Jose, CA, US
(408) 266-7151
My personal favourite Goodwill in the San Francisco Bay Area! Fully one half of the store is devoted to housewares, with a huge selection and reasonable prices (that same half of the store is converted to weird clothes in Halloween season, which is just as fun ;-). Lots of crystal, silver, brass, and china. Has occasional 'runs' on items -- such as a ton of tapestry pillows for $5 each. Worth coming back to this store frequently.
Savers
222 Business Circle
at corner of Stevens Creek & Bascom
San Jose, CA, US
(408) 287-0591
More stores in Hayward, Milpitas, Redwood City, & San Francisco.
Basic thrift store with varying stock. Prices can be low to average. Look for curtains, tablecloths, silver trays, goblets, silverware, baskets, picture frames, small furniture, vintage suitcases, and bedsheets.
