My life, my universe, and some other things...
![]() If you've stumbled upon this page, then you're just about as nosey online as I am. What do you want to know? Well, all the good stuff (and "good" is, of course, highly subjective) is locked up in my LiveJournal. It's friends-only for a variety of reasons. Inquire, and if I'm acquainted with you somehow, I might let you in.
Work: How do I fund my life of non-stop glamour and excitement? Like many an artist, I pimp some of that art out for my daily crust. Thus do writers become editors. After many years slogging in the trenches, I've worked my way to a point where I get a byline for writing about stuff I believe in. Keep at it kids, all this can be yours too! Currently, I'm the main voice of the Green Picks blog at Yahoo! Green. I've researched everything from conflict diamonds to kitty litter and even teamed up with my husband to produce a video on low-carbon food. Living lighter on the planet is one of my passions, and I'm thrilled that I can share this kind of information as part of my job. I also do more prosaic stuff, like copy-editing and user-interface writing for various incarnations of Messenger, Local, Avatars, Travel, OMG, Mobile, etc., as well as the Yahoo! homepage and marketing emails. Sorry, I'm not in customer care, but have you tried reading the help pages?
Play: All the really pretty stuff is in my Costume Closet, which I update whenever I make something new. I even add pictures to my Flickrstream when events warrant (either costumes or travel, go figure). If you like home decorating projects with a dark spin, try Gothic Martha Stewart. I don't update the site much, because honestly, I've said most of what I want to say about the topic by now. But about once a year, I may invent a new crafty thing worth writing up.
Travel: My writing is also featured at T&T's Real Travels. This is the business my husband and I started in late 2004. We've set foot on every continent, including Antarctica, and we want to share our love of travel with fellow Americans (who get the fewest vacation days of any industrialized nation). We hope to inspire you to see the world, and let you travel virtually through our journals, photos, and DVDs. Explore Antarctica & Rio on our first disk, tour France, Egypt, Middle-Earth, Central Europe, Italy, or just check out our store for the latest releases. Get a twice-monthly taste of travel by subscribing to our video podcasts via RSS or on iTunes.
Family: My husband and I live in a Silicon Valley bungalow with two cats who hate each other -- Melusine and Toulouse. Our parents and other family mostly live nearby in the San Francisco Bay Area, and our extended families are in Florida, Virginia, Colorado, and Italy. We have friends around the U.S. and in the U.K., who we love to visit when we can. Along with filming our travels, my husband is a professional videographer and films corporate events and weddings. Check out his latest work at Video Impressions.
Trivia: A few of my favourite things: National Public Radio, Doctor Who (current and classic), More Hip Than Hippie podcast, feminism, Mythbusters, the Lord of the Rings books and movies, the Clintons, Pink Drinks(tm), Salon, Thomas Hardy's novels, hosting parties, and New Wave synthpop. A few of my least favourite things: Migraines, SUVs, bottled water, the telephone, little dogs, Microsoft products, and plastic grocery bags. Fanatical believer in: Macintosh computers, to-do lists, monogamy, the serial comma, TiVo, lipstick, and the Screen. Consumeristic junk I like: My amazon.com wishlist. I only drink: Tap water, coffee, tea, and liquor. Bet you never guessed: I've lived in California most of my life, but I don't drive a car and have never had a license. I have always gotten around by public transit, walking, and carpooling. Places you might find me: Thrift stores, GBACG events, BayCon, Costume College, occasional SCA events, Jo-Ann Fabrics, eBay. What not to email me about: vampires, how goth you are or I'm not, volunteering for your con or event, putting links to your site on mine. What I'd love to get emails about: you just bought a bunch of our travel DVDs and love them, you want to interview me for TV or major publications about any of the ridiculous things I do, you want to publish my hypothetical books.
