Salon des Artistes

Ah, the True Artistes! These are the Toreador brethren who have, not only an eye for beauty, but a talent for creating it in some form or another.

What is Art?

Art, (noun) 1. The quality, production, expression, or realm of what is beautiful, or of more than ordinary significance.
--Dictionary definition

Since the First City, Toreadors have excelled in beautifying their environment and expressing their thoughts and selves through every means imaginable. The Toreador has created art and played muse to mortal artists. The spirit and will to create and the drive towards beauty are at the core of the Toreador soul.

"Art" encompasses everything on earth that can be fashioned or expressed by Kindred or kine. And real art isn't limited to the paintings hanging in the Louvre or the frescos on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Artistic passion can be expressed in paint, stone, plastic, wood, words, wit, sound, paper, fabric, hair, make-up, dance, drama, performance, interiors, exteriors, electricity, color, and literally any endeavor mortal and immortal can manipulate. Toreador Artistes see the world (and sometimes Humanity) as their canvas.

The Path of the True Artiste

How do you know if you really are an Artiste? Well, the definition is that you have and can and continue to actually produce something of artistic value. The form your art takes is irrelevant, as long as the work is recognized as having true artistic expression. The value of the work is usually determined by the rest of the Clan, although you should have sufficient conviction in your work to defend it against petty critics.

It is also extremely important that you continue to create worthwhile art. You absolutely cannot rest on your laurels! If, as a neonate, you created brilliant, awe-inspiring work, yet for the past hundred years you have produced nothing at all, then you will be labeled a burnout, or perhaps worse. Exactly how often you must premier new works is variable and is often dependent upon the company you keep. But you should be able to prove that you are working on new things with some kind of regularity.

However, a long string of unfinished projects will not secure an Artiste reputation. If all you have is art that is incompletely rendered, you may well be classed as a pretender or even a Poseur who cannot accept his nature. The True Artiste may struggle to create, but, none-the-less, she does create.

Theater of the Damned

While Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, Artistes are always beholden to their audiences, especially undead Artistes. While a truly gifted mortal can achieve recognition a hundred years after his death, the Kindred Artiste is always as present as her art. Thus, the immortal Artiste's actions and reputation will forever reflect upon her works, and they can never be judged impartially by her peers.

This is where the Toreador Poseur can exert his power and influence upon the reception of the Artiste's works. Therefore, most Artistes eventually learn not to too quickly disdain the attentions of their Poseur fellows, or they will constantly struggle for any place in Toreador society. While it is truly the Artistes who create, they are usually indebted to the Poseurs for favorable criticism and appreciation.
