Bisexual Stripe 18th-Century Jacket Outfit

Posted on March 10, 2025 by Trystan L. Bass
Bisexual Stripe 18th-Century Jacket Outfit at Carnevale 2025

I had one last-minute “stretch goal” costume for Carnevale 2025 that I managed to finish — I wanted to use the 2 yards of bisexual stripe silk from Silk Baron to make a jacket from the tried-and-true JP Ryan 1750-1780s jackets pattern. I also had some purple taffeta in the stash that coordinated well to

18th-Century Leopard on Noah’s Ark at Carnevale

18th-Century Leopard at Carnevale 2025

For a Noah’s Ark themed party at Carnevale 2025, I looked around at what costumes I already had that I could use and found Leonard’s leopard-print silk breeches and waistcoat. Perfect base for an 18th-century-ish leopard! I found a faux-fur vest on eBay and carefully chopped it up to make a tail, mitts for front

Gothic Curiosities Ensemble

Gothic Curiosities Gown at Carnevale 2025

Remember that 18th-c. Does 17th-c. Masquerade Gown that I was so excited about, but then got almost finished making and hated it? When planning for Carnevale 2025, I came upon a way to resurrect it into something more me that I could love — and get multiple uses out of. The party theme was Cabinet

Pre-Raphaelite Gown Inspired by Sidonia von Bork

Posted on March 8, 2025 by Trystan L. Bass
PreRaphaelite Gown at Carnevale 2025

When I heard there was a Pre-Raphaelite ball at Carnevale 2025, I poured through paintings for inspiration. I love this style and have several pre-raph prints hanging in my house, so there were many to chose from. But being me, I also wanted something dark and gothy, which isn’t as typical of this genre. Then

Pink Batty Caftan

Pink Batty Caftan

One last project for 2024 — a new caftan to wear in Cancun! I found this pink bat-print cotton and just had to make it up into a retro ’60s caftan. Easy-peasy project and I definitely want to use the pattern again, especially since I already have several caftans in this exact style, both vintage

Leonard’s 18th-Century Pink Suit

Posted on January 11, 2025 by Trystan L. Bass
Leonard's Pink Suit at the Chevalier Event 2024

It’s been a long time coming, but I finally finished Leonard’s pink suit! I made the pants and waistcoat back in 2023 and commissioned the matching coat around then too. But I never got around to trimming the coat until I was inspired to wear the whole outfit for the Salon at Palais Royal event

Purple Silk Tudor Round Gown & Black Linen Kirtle

Posted on January 11, 2025 by Trystan L. Bass
Tudor Round Gown at Collegium 2024

Sometime in early to mid 2024, I got a hankering for a new 16th-century outfit. No reason, nowhere to wear it, just wanted one. And not necessarily a fancy one either. I decided to order the Tudor Tailor pattern for a woman’s round gown and see how that made up. Although first, I realized I

Black & White Caftan Inspired by 1910s Dress Reform

Posted on January 11, 2025 by Trystan L. Bass
Black & White Caftan

One last-minute outfit for Costume College 2024 was very loosely inspired (pun intended) by the 1910s Austrian dress reform designs of Emilie Flöge. These styles were corset-free and intended to give women more liberty and freedom of movement. Flöge had a successful boutique with her unconventional fashion designs, but she’s also known as the muse of

Day-to-Night Barbie

Day-to-Night Barbie at GBACG event 2024

I joined the Barbie train a little late but also because the GBACG announced a Barbie themed event for 2024. And then I decided to get double use out of the costume by finishing it for Costume College for the movie/TV themed Friday night party. Took a while to decide which Barbie to make but

Fantasy Burgundian Gown

Posted on January 11, 2025 by Trystan L. Bass
Fantasy Burgundian Gown at CoCo 24

After Carnevale 2024, I was randomly hankering to make something! And I had this gorgeous burgundy liquid metallic velvet in my stash that somehow said “princess gown” like Sleeping Beauty style. Which technically is a mid-15th-century Burgundian style like this Pinterest board and these: Complete with the pointy hennin, of course. But I wasn’t interested

Gothic Reversible Bodice With Tails

tailed bodice & vampire balls 2023

Who doesn’t love a costume piece that does double duty? When I saw this pattern by Rabbit & Hat for a lace-up bodice with tails that was intended to be reversible, I knew it would be handy. Turns out, this became the perfect costume for two different vampire balls around Halloween 2023. The pattern itself

Renaissance Vampire Witch Queen

Anne Rice Vampire Lestat Ball 2023

When I decided to go to the Anne Rice Vampire Ball in New Orleans for Halloween 2023, I just wanted to wear something fabulous. Much like when I made my first outfit for the Portland Vampire Masquerade Ball, I let myself fantasize about what shapes, styles, fabrics, and trims inspired me. I wasn’t going to

Gothic Heroine at Costume College

Gothic Heroine at Costume College, photo by Mark Edwards

This was a quickie costume I threw together for Costume College because I’d heard the Friday Night Social had some kind of literature cosplay theme. Also, it was the hottest summer on record, I was only going to be at the event for a short time, thus I needed an easy, comfortable outfit. What’s better

Gothic Mucha Maiden at Costume College

Gothic Mucha Maiden at Costume College

I’d already worn my velvet teagown for two different Mucha-themed events when a group of friends suggested a Mucha meetup at Costume College 2023. As much as I love that teagown, I really did not want to wear it again this year and especially not in L.A. in late July! So I went about assembling

Purple Faux-Tuny Dress

Purple Faux-Tuny Dress at Costume College 2023

For Costume College 2023, I could only make a short trip and thus didn’t make or even bring a bunch of costumes. But for some reason, I had the idea to make this one, a faux Fortuny dress. I’d been looking around for that pre-pleated “plisse” fabric that mimics the style of Fortuny’s elusive silk

I should have worn heels &/or more makeup, lol. But @sashavelour’s show at the Berkeley Rep was magnificent! Funny, smart, thinky, sassy, everything I needed. This week needs more sparkle! I’m slowly unpacking from my trips & the 1st things out were these fun buys from Du Barry Fashions in Las Vegas. Purple glittery leggings, a pink rhinestone pill case, a tiny tiara to top a wig, & some cool deco-esque earrings. Forgot to post this costume earlier — I wore this skull-print jacket (made from a tablecloth), plus a new purple hat, at our chateau last week. Look where I get to stay this week! @maisondechastenay has this beautiful room for me with cat pillows on the bed 😻 The house is beautiful & I’m amazed at the work @lisavandenberghe has put in to make this such a charming & comfortable B&B. Hanging out with my bestie at another 18th-century party in France! Yesterday was hot & humid at Vaux le Vicomte, but @fannywilk’s pink apero party was delightful! Spooky sunset shenanigans in the chateau’s upper story. Just a little walk around our chateau yesterday! Brunch al fresco at the Donjon!
