Bisexual Stripe 18th-Century Jacket Outfit

Posted on March 10, 2025 by Trystan L. Bass
Bisexual Stripe 18th-Century Jacket Outfit at Carnevale 2025

I had one last-minute “stretch goal” costume for Carnevale 2025 that I managed to finish — I wanted to use the 2 yards of bisexual stripe silk from Silk Baron to make a jacket from the tried-and-true JP Ryan 1750-1780s jackets pattern. I also had some purple taffeta in the stash that coordinated well to

18th-Century Leopard on Noah’s Ark at Carnevale

18th-Century Leopard at Carnevale 2025

For a Noah’s Ark themed party at Carnevale 2025, I looked around at what costumes I already had that I could use and found Leonard’s leopard-print silk breeches and waistcoat. Perfect base for an 18th-century-ish leopard! I found a faux-fur vest on eBay and carefully chopped it up to make a tail, mitts for front

Leonard’s 18th-Century Pink Suit

Posted on January 11, 2025 by Trystan L. Bass
Leonard's Pink Suit at the Chevalier Event 2024

It’s been a long time coming, but I finally finished Leonard’s pink suit! I made the pants and waistcoat back in 2023 and commissioned the matching coat around then too. But I never got around to trimming the coat until I was inspired to wear the whole outfit for the Salon at Palais Royal event

Lollipop 18th-Century Outfit

Posted on February 26, 2024 by Trystan
18th-Century Lollipop

Sometime around Christmas before Carnevale 2024, I heard about a new costumed meetup, a Toybox Afternoon Tea at the Hotel Danieli. The theme was enchanted childhood and toys, which didn’t interest me at first. But then I was looking through my stash and saw this pink patchwork stuff (I think it was a bedspread?) that

Light-Up Panniers

Posted on February 23, 2024 by Trystan
Lite-Up Panniers

When I heard about a Carnevale dance party with the theme of “Viva las Versailles in Venice,” I immediately thought I needed something shiny and bright. I’d always wanted to do some costume with cute, decorative exposed panniers, so I decided on a showgirl type costume with blinged-up panniers. I looked through AliExpress at rhinestone

Black & White at Vaux-le-Vicomte

Vaux-le-Vicomte 2023

When I went to Fete Galante in 2023, I also had the chance to attend a costumed dinner at the château de Vaux le Vicomte outside of Paris. In summers, this baroque palace not only allows guests to come in costume but they light up the grounds with candles at night and end the evening

Black Silk Robe a la Francaise at Fete Galante, Again

Posted on September 29, 2023 by Trystan L. Bass
Black Silk Robe a la Francaise at Fete Galante 2023

Since the Rubens masquerade gown didn’t work out, I had to pull something from my closet for Fete Galante in 2023 with just two weeks before the event. I couldn’t sew anything new at that late date (though I briefly considered making a new wig). So I wore the same black silk francaise I wore

18th-c. Does 17th-c. Masquerade Gown – In Progress

1740s - Frances Courtenay by Thomas Hudson

I’ve wanted to make a repro of this gown since seeing the painting of Lady Frances Courtenay by Thomas Hudson at the Huntington in 2011. I love seeing how one era interprets another era, and this style is so romantic and pretty! Apparently, this was a whole genre of painting, a trend for upper-class women

Leonard’s Pink Suit – In Progress

Posted on September 20, 2023 by Trystan L. Bass

In an ongoing quest to figure out 18th-century men’s pants for me / Leonard, I started a new pair of breeches that were just going to be to test out the pattern but have developed into a whole new suit. I made umpteen mockups of the fall-front breeches from the original pattern by Eagle’s View

Leonard’s 18th-c. Aladdin Sane Bowie Suit

Leonard’s 18th-c. Aladdin Sane Bowie Suit

This costume idea had been brewing in my head, but it wasn’t until a combo of pandemic lockdown and an excellent cosplayer opening up for commissions that it came to fruition. I’d been dreaming of David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane image (which I have a huge poster of) and his Ziggy Stardust persona, but done as

18th-Century Gothic Jacket

Posted on June 23, 2022 by Trystan L. Bass
18thc gothic jacket

My favorite item of 18th-century women’s clothing is the jacket — there are so many varieties and styles, they’re relatively easy to make, and you don’t need much fabric! Plus, you can mix and match jackets with different petticoats to style yourself a fun, versatile wardrobe. I’ve used the J.P. Ryan 18th-century ladies’ jackets pattern

Black Chemise Gown

Posted on February 11, 2021 by Trystan L. Bass
Armstreet - black chemise gown

I randomly bought this gown from Armstreet — they call it the “Found Princess” Chemise — during a brief window when it was available in black. I’m so glad I did! It’s made of a soft, floaty cotton-blend fabric that feels delicious and, though sheer, has enough substance to not be obscene. While made as

Venetian Carnevale Broken-Hearted Gown

Posted on December 20, 2020 by Trystan L. Bass
Carnevale Red Gown at Cafe Florian

One of the events I planned to attend at Venetian Carnevale 2020 was the “red party” held by friends — it was a dinner where guests had to wear a little bit or a lot of red. I went through quite a few costume concepts for this one because I thought I’d wear something from

Venetian Carnevale Harlequin Gown

Posted on December 18, 2020 by Trystan L. Bass
Carnevale Harlequin Gown

For Venetian Carnevale 2020, I wanted some kind of harlequin outfit because that’s so iconically “carnevale.” But it had to be in my favorite gothic colors, and I couldn’t find any fabric remotely close to that. The obvious solution was to make my own, but wow, that sounded difficult! So I talked to my mom

Leonard’s 18th-Century Black Coat With Leopard Print

Posted on December 15, 2020 by Trystan L. Bass
Venceslao Verlin - An Interior With Elegant Company

Many of us have seen this delightful painting with an 18th-c. gent wearing leopard-print breeches and waistcoat. It’s the generically named “An Interior with Elegant Company” by Venceslao Verlin (d. 1780). While I can’t find much about this specific painting, there are other images from around 18th-c. Europe of men and a few women wearing

I should have worn heels &/or more makeup, lol. But @sashavelour’s show at the Berkeley Rep was magnificent! Funny, smart, thinky, sassy, everything I needed. This week needs more sparkle! I’m slowly unpacking from my trips & the 1st things out were these fun buys from Du Barry Fashions in Las Vegas. Purple glittery leggings, a pink rhinestone pill case, a tiny tiara to top a wig, & some cool deco-esque earrings. Forgot to post this costume earlier — I wore this skull-print jacket (made from a tablecloth), plus a new purple hat, at our chateau last week. Look where I get to stay this week! @maisondechastenay has this beautiful room for me with cat pillows on the bed 😻 The house is beautiful & I’m amazed at the work @lisavandenberghe has put in to make this such a charming & comfortable B&B. Hanging out with my bestie at another 18th-century party in France! Yesterday was hot & humid at Vaux le Vicomte, but @fannywilk’s pink apero party was delightful! Spooky sunset shenanigans in the chateau’s upper story. Just a little walk around our chateau yesterday! Brunch al fresco at the Donjon!
