How to Plan a Costumed Event Yourself

Posted on October 2, 2018 by Trystan L. Bass
renaissance dinner

Everyone sees the pictures online — a francaise dinner, a steampunk picnic, Costume College, a cosplay meetup, the Fête Galante, Venetian Carnevale. The idea is the same, it’s a bunch of friends in fabulous costumes having loads of fun! How can you get yourself some of that??? Sure, you can try to wrangle an invite

Introducing Miss Shirley U. Jest, Faux Drag Queen

Posted on August 7, 2012 by Trystan

A bio-queen a la “RuPaul’s Drag U,” even tho’ nobody figured it out at the time. This was the costume I pulled together at the last minute for Costume College’s Saturday-night Gala. I intended to be a female drag queen — a faux queen — but everyone just thought it was me dressed up extra

Hogwarts robes

Posted on June 24, 2007 by Trystan

This is my best example of thrift-store, no-sew costuming as well as costuming on a budget! It’s also a fun, comfortable outfit to wear, and something that would make an ideal costume for anyone obsessed with Harry Potter. The elements: white button-down shirt, black knee-length pleated skirt, black tie with tiny crests embroidered on it,

Underneath It All

18th-century smock pattern

Gah. Making underwear is one of the most boring things ever. It’s simple, but tedious. Guess I need to hit the thrift Saturday for some cheap white sheets. If I can’t find any/enough, I do have a coupon for Hancocks. Budget Costuming Tip #20: Joann and Hancock might not be good for many things, but

Gatsby Picnic 2005

Posted on September 13, 2005 by Trystan

I’d always been intimidated by the Art Deco Society’s Gatsby Picnic. It’s a costume-only event, and the society has a reputation for being historical sticklers. I’d heard they prefer authentic vintage garb and gear over mere reproduction clothing. As the 1920s had never been a particular favourite clothing era of mine, I figured I’d never

I should have worn heels &/or more makeup, lol. But @sashavelour’s show at the Berkeley Rep was magnificent! Funny, smart, thinky, sassy, everything I needed. This week needs more sparkle! I’m slowly unpacking from my trips & the 1st things out were these fun buys from Du Barry Fashions in Las Vegas. Purple glittery leggings, a pink rhinestone pill case, a tiny tiara to top a wig, & some cool deco-esque earrings. Forgot to post this costume earlier — I wore this skull-print jacket (made from a tablecloth), plus a new purple hat, at our chateau last week. Look where I get to stay this week! @maisondechastenay has this beautiful room for me with cat pillows on the bed 😻 The house is beautiful & I’m amazed at the work @lisavandenberghe has put in to make this such a charming & comfortable B&B. Hanging out with my bestie at another 18th-century party in France! Yesterday was hot & humid at Vaux le Vicomte, but @fannywilk’s pink apero party was delightful! Spooky sunset shenanigans in the chateau’s upper story. Just a little walk around our chateau yesterday! Brunch al fresco at the Donjon!
