Shoes for Leonard?

Posted on March 30, 2011 by Trystan

All this talk online of the American Duchess shoes got me thinking — I should just get some Fugawees for Leonard! Because he deserves it 😉 Ok, well, I want it, and leather shoes are more correct than silk for a man, even a super-fop like Leonard (though according to his autobiography, he was *quite*

Leonard – the beginning

Posted on February 2, 2011 by Trystan

I have a wild hair (hah!) to play Leonard Autie, hairdresser to Marie Antoinette, at the GBACG’s Petit Trianon event in July. Sarah will be the queen, Kendra will be Poliganc, and a bunch of our friends will be the rest of the court. When casting about for characters, I first thot Rose Bertin, but

Hogwarts robes

Posted on June 24, 2007 by Trystan

This is my best example of thrift-store, no-sew costuming as well as costuming on a budget! It’s also a fun, comfortable outfit to wear, and something that would make an ideal costume for anyone obsessed with Harry Potter. The elements: white button-down shirt, black knee-length pleated skirt, black tie with tiny crests embroidered on it,

Fairy-Tale 18th-Century Pair

Posted on March 22, 2006 by Trystan

These are some my favorite costumes I’ve ever made. I almost regret selling them on eBay, except that I got a very good price and the money went towards the closing costs on our house. So a fair trade, really. The dressform photos below are from the eBay listing. For the GBACG’s second Faerie Tale

Done, but Not Premiered

Posted on September 21, 2005 by Trystan

Technically done again! No really. Well, ok, maybe not. I could add more. This is one of those costumes you could always just add a little more too. But for right now, I’m finished. Finished sewing the trim on the overgown’s neckline, then made a sash for the back. Used the sari trim lined with

Arwen Overgown

Posted on September 18, 2005 by Trystan

After much hemming and hawing (no pun intended), I made the overgown. Well, it’s not quite done yet. Need to finish hand-sewing the trim around the incredibly wide neckline. Also need to add sash ties in the back because in my attempt to make the overgown big enough to go over the first gown, I

Almost Done, Accessorizing

Posted on August 28, 2005 by Trystan

Technically, both costumes are done now. Pulled a marathon (for me; I stayed up past midnight 😉 sewing session last night and finished my gown. Designed sleeves based on, well, not much ‘cept the fact that I wanted to be able to eat in the dress yet still have a semblance of Floppy Elf Sleeve

Arwen’s Gown, In Progress

Posted on August 14, 2005 by Trystan
Arwen's Midnight Requiem Gown

Today, I got the main body of my black and silver elf gown done. Not sure if I’ll bother with the overgown because when I sewed the wide sari trim to the neckline, it just looked so good against the solid black. I think the silver overgown (a la the two-part Requiem outfit) might detract

Aragorn Tunic, Done-ish

Posted on August 7, 2005 by Trystan

I sweated it out in the nearly 100-degree house and almost completed the Aragorn tunic. Omg, do I rock or what?!? This thing looks freakin’ awesome. The perfect silver and black diamond fabric, fully lined, stand-up collar, fold-over closure, totally like the movie costume, and just cool in its own right. I’m totally self-satisfied with

Lady Pirate

Posted on June 1, 2004 by Trystan

Lady Fifi MacFoufster, captain of the pirate ship, the Purple Prose, writer of overwrought words, wielder of the poisoned pen, mixer of metaphors, and defender of the serial comma! About 2am the night before I first wore this, I invented the persona for this costume. Seemed appropriate, being that I’m a writer and editor by

Avast thar, she is done!

Lady Pirate

Done! With one week to spare. Trimmed up the coat today, buttons and silver braid. Very flashy and Hollywood. Used up almost all the buttons and trim too. Even put buttons above the center-back vent. It just looked cool, even if means I can’t sit back against a chair in this coat. The price we

You look so fancy I can tell

Posted on May 22, 2004 by Trystan

My pirate lady costume is so goddamned girlie! It’s Foufy McPouftster. It’s dandy, it’s fey, it’s don’t-you-think-I-look-good-in-this-hat. Jack Sparrow would laugh me right off the gangplank, but he might want to shag me speechless first. Well, no, there’s not enough cleavage for that 😉 But it is the least “AAAARRRR” pirate you can imagine. It’s

Skirting the issue

Posted on May 20, 2004 by Trystan

This skirt is hella cool, but it’s kicking my ass. All the hand sewing! My eyes are blurry, my back aches. Last night, it was sewing the pleats to the waistband. Tedious as all heck, especially since I made the pleats probably a smidge too small. The skirt’s pleated edge ended up being exactly the

random observation

Lady Pirate

Cartridge-pleating while mildly intoxicated is fun! The stitches might not be even, but they aren’t when I’m stone cold sober either 🙂 The gingham trick is actually more of a pain in the arse than just eyeballing the stitch length. Dunno if I’ll bother again (but I have yards and yards of gingham strips all

My backyard makeover is complete! Added a patio umbrella last weekend & am ready to use the firepit tonight. Coconut bunnies & mango piggies at Peony Seafood Restaurant! Had dim sum with my parents & then we set up the cantilever umbrella on my patio, which was a huge hassle because of filling the giant base with sand. 18th-century but make it goth. I’m incapable of anything else! Another lazy Sunday for these two. I’ve finally got a purple(ish) rose! And lots of pink ones! The pink rose bush is in full sun, while the other is partly shaded. But the hated yellow rose flourished over there so I’m hopeful. Thanks to @the.garden.mamas for planting these beauties! All the other gothy plants seem to be going great too. The chair cushions I made a little while back are finally in place! A friend gave me one of those bat corkscrews! It’s not as quick to use as a regular one, but it sure is cute. Big crowd in SF today! Just a few of the signs I could get pix of. Heading into the weekend like…
