How to Plan a Costumed Event Yourself

Posted on October 2, 2018 by Trystan L. Bass
renaissance dinner

Everyone sees the pictures online — a francaise dinner, a steampunk picnic, Costume College, a cosplay meetup, the Fête Galante, Venetian Carnevale. The idea is the same, it’s a bunch of friends in fabulous costumes having loads of fun! How can you get yourself some of that??? Sure, you can try to wrangle an invite

Just Keep Sewing…

Posted on December 29, 2014 by Trystan L. Bass
Time

Only a few days left until my 12th Night deadline to get all these commissions done! Eeep. Christmas tried to interfere, but at least I had finished my family’s handmade holiday gifts back during my Thanksgiving break. But still, I have SO much to do, no matter how well I schedule, plan, and to-do list

Tips for Sewing and Blogging With Injuries

Note: I’m not a doctor, and I don’t even play one on the internet. This article does not constitute actual medical advice — it’s just what I’ve done, what works for me, and what I think is a good idea. Consult with professionals so you don’t hurt yourself or make what hurts worse! It’s a

What Gets Me Thru the Long Sewing Days

Posted on April 30, 2013 by Trystan

I don’t have any sewing progress photos because I’m just going, going, going. Also, the black francaise took up permanent residence on my dressform for months, so I couldn’t photograph anything else effectively (I tried some iPhone mirror pix in the middle of fitting stuff on myself, & wow, those sucked). The to-do list for

It’s a one-woman 18th-century sewing sweatshop around here

Posted on March 11, 2013 by Trystan

And it has to be, if I’m going to get all these outfits done before I leave for France in May! Holy moly, I’ve got so much to do. I had to cancel a bunch of social events on weekends (tho’ I’m still obligated to attend two SCA events & one faire with Bella Donna;

CoCo on the Brain

Posted on May 16, 2012 by Trystan

CoCo, meaning Costume College, of course. I’ve been going back & forth about what to make for my Gala gown. I had one idea all set, with fabric bought months ago. And then … Costume Attention Deficit Disorder struck. Alas! Now I’m scrambling to see if I can find / afford new fabric in time.

What I want to do vs. what I need to do

Posted on August 23, 2011 by Trystan

In one of my insomniac moments last night, I fantasized about making a new black 1570s gown to wear to Much Ado About Sebastapol. *sigh* There are many things stacked against that happening, the biggest being I’m critically low on time, and second, I’d need a new pattern draft, ideally fitted by someone better than

Procrastination, I haz it

Posted on June 24, 2011 by Trystan
Time

Gah, I’ve been SUCH a slacker this week. I have so much work to do on Leonard’s outfit, yet I utterly failed to work on it after Tuesday night. Partly, I blame illness, mostly, I blame laziness. It’s worse than laziness, actually. It’s that horrible overwhelmed feeling I get when a project has so many

What’s left?

Posted on June 21, 2011 by Trystan

Because I’m feeling a little daunted by how much I have to do for Leonard, especially since I’m going to West-An Tir War and I won’t have the 4th of July weekend to sew, let’s make a to-do list! Pants: –Hand-sew waistband facing/lining. –Make buttonholes. –Make eyelets for back lacing. –Hand-sew leg linings down. –Make

It’s not motivation, it’s desperation

Posted on January 25, 2010 by Trystan
Time

There’s a smell of fear in the air — I looked at the calendar. I realized I have way too many costumes to produce in a shockingly short amount of time… Motivation won’t come to me, I just have to force myself to get shit done. NOW. Thus, tonight I cleared away some sewing room

Just keep sewing…

Time

Madly pushing along on the To-Do List of D00m. Did lots of bits on various things this weekend, but only finished a couple. Started and completed a new chemise, a quilted supporting petticoat (that’s a real hack job, gah, but functional), and the bat pocket. Finished the inside of the polonaise and made the black

Finished

Time

Yay!!! Well, I’m not happy with mine (it’s a weird dress, but that’s the portrait and era’s fault; I’m so totally ripping the bertha and tucker off after this). But it’s done and mostly fits, especially if I don’t tight-lace (oops, I actually lost a tiny bit of weight after I did the skirt). Added

Whip it good

Posted on December 31, 2006 by Trystan
Ladies Sewing Circle & Terrorist Society

I’ve been hand-sewing since about 10am, with a couple breaks for breakfast, loads of coffee, and some chocolate. Not only do I still hate hand-sewing, but I’m beyond BORED of hand-sewing. It’s like watching paint dry. No, it’s like *making* paint dry. Omg, it is so BOOOOOOOORRRRRIIIIIINNNNNNG. I can’t believe how boring this much hand-sewing

Seven Inches From the Midday Sun

Posted on June 26, 2006 by Trystan

That’s how it felt all weekend. HOT. 90s for four days in a row. My sewing room was literally a sweatshop Saturday and Sunday. But dammit, I got some things done! Bodice is mostly complete, though I ran out of hooks and eyes for the stomacher. Would have liked to use hook-and-eye tape, but the

I should have worn heels &/or more makeup, lol. But @sashavelour’s show at the Berkeley Rep was magnificent! Funny, smart, thinky, sassy, everything I needed. This week needs more sparkle! I’m slowly unpacking from my trips & the 1st things out were these fun buys from Du Barry Fashions in Las Vegas. Purple glittery leggings, a pink rhinestone pill case, a tiny tiara to top a wig, & some cool deco-esque earrings. Forgot to post this costume earlier — I wore this skull-print jacket (made from a tablecloth), plus a new purple hat, at our chateau last week. Look where I get to stay this week! @maisondechastenay has this beautiful room for me with cat pillows on the bed 😻 The house is beautiful & I’m amazed at the work @lisavandenberghe has put in to make this such a charming & comfortable B&B. Hanging out with my bestie at another 18th-century party in France! Yesterday was hot & humid at Vaux le Vicomte, but @fannywilk’s pink apero party was delightful! Spooky sunset shenanigans in the chateau’s upper story. Just a little walk around our chateau yesterday! Brunch al fresco at the Donjon!
