18th-Century Leopard on Noah’s Ark at Carnevale

Posted on March 10, 2025 by Trystan L. Bass
18th-Century Leopard at Carnevale 2025

For a Noah’s Ark themed party at Carnevale 2025, I looked around at what costumes I already had that I could use and found Leonard’s leopard-print silk breeches and waistcoat. Perfect base for an 18th-century-ish leopard! I found a faux-fur vest on eBay and carefully chopped it up to make a tail, mitts for front

Pre-Raphaelite Gown Inspired by Sidonia von Bork

PreRaphaelite Gown at Carnevale 2025

When I heard there was a Pre-Raphaelite ball at Carnevale 2025, I poured through paintings for inspiration. I love this style and have several pre-raph prints hanging in my house, so there were many to chose from. But being me, I also wanted something dark and gothy, which isn’t as typical of this genre. Then

Leonard’s 18th-Century Pink Suit

Posted on January 11, 2025 by Trystan L. Bass
Leonard's Pink Suit at the Chevalier Event 2024

It’s been a long time coming, but I finally finished Leonard’s pink suit! I made the pants and waistcoat back in 2023 and commissioned the matching coat around then too. But I never got around to trimming the coat until I was inspired to wear the whole outfit for the Salon at Palais Royal event

Day-to-Night Barbie

Posted on January 11, 2025 by Trystan L. Bass
Day-to-Night Barbie at GBACG event 2024

I joined the Barbie train a little late but also because the GBACG announced a Barbie themed event for 2024. And then I decided to get double use out of the costume by finishing it for Costume College for the movie/TV themed Friday night party. Took a while to decide which Barbie to make but

Light-Up Panniers

Lite-Up Panniers

When I heard about a Carnevale dance party with the theme of “Viva las Versailles in Venice,” I immediately thought I needed something shiny and bright. I’d always wanted to do some costume with cute, decorative exposed panniers, so I decided on a showgirl type costume with blinged-up panniers. I looked through AliExpress at rhinestone

1940s Spiderweb Robe & Victory Rolls

Posted on February 23, 2024 by Trystan
Purple Spiderweb Gown

I was hosting a small daytime party at Carnevale 2024 — it was a gaming salon with a “fancy loungewear” costume theme. Since I’d be running around as hostess, I needed a simple, practical outfit (but still fabulous ;). Luckily, I already had a custom-made “Carlotta” Spiderweb Robe from Nicoletta Carlone in purple that I’d ordered

Black & Gold Silk Venetian Courtesan Gown Redux

Black & Gold Venetian Gown Redux

The Bella Donna Historical Performers were invited to perform at Carnevale in Venice for the Boticelli’s Primavera Dinner. While I don’t sing with the group, I’m a supporting member and needed to dress the part. Alas, my old black and gold gown was in sorry shape, and the bodice no longer fit. Also, I’d always

Black & White at Vaux-le-Vicomte

Vaux-le-Vicomte 2023

When I went to Fete Galante in 2023, I also had the chance to attend a costumed dinner at the château de Vaux le Vicomte outside of Paris. In summers, this baroque palace not only allows guests to come in costume but they light up the grounds with candles at night and end the evening

Wicked Stepmother at Carnevale

Wicked Stepmother at Carnevale

One party at Carnevale 2023 had the theme of “Once Upon a Time” and invited guests to come in any sort of fairy-tale costumes (but no Disney cosplay!). I looked through my closet and decided on something vaguely wicked stepmother-y using my black gothic fitted dress (which I wore twice that year at Carnevale, making

Leonard’s Pink Suit – In Progress

Posted on September 20, 2023 by Trystan L. Bass

In an ongoing quest to figure out 18th-century men’s pants for me / Leonard, I started a new pair of breeches that were just going to be to test out the pattern but have developed into a whole new suit. I made umpteen mockups of the fall-front breeches from the original pattern by Eagle’s View

Purple Spanish Renaissance Gown

Purple Spanish Renaissance Gown

Lockdown was a drag, and I didn’t feel like sewing anything but I had the idea to commission stuff. At some point in 2021, I requested a custom version of this Spanish 16th-century gown from Fiorentina Costuming on Etsy. The fit and workmanship is great, and the style is exactly what I wanted. Highly recommended and

Leonard’s 18th-c. Aladdin Sane Bowie Suit

Posted on September 20, 2023 by Trystan L. Bass
Leonard’s 18th-c. Aladdin Sane Bowie Suit

This costume idea had been brewing in my head, but it wasn’t until a combo of pandemic lockdown and an excellent cosplayer opening up for commissions that it came to fruition. I’d been dreaming of David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane image (which I have a huge poster of) and his Ziggy Stardust persona, but done as

18th-Century Gothic Jacket

Posted on June 23, 2022 by Trystan L. Bass
18thc gothic jacket

My favorite item of 18th-century women’s clothing is the jacket — there are so many varieties and styles, they’re relatively easy to make, and you don’t need much fabric! Plus, you can mix and match jackets with different petticoats to style yourself a fun, versatile wardrobe. I’ve used the J.P. Ryan 18th-century ladies’ jackets pattern

Evil Mermaid at Carnevale

Carnevale 2022 Pirates & Mermaids Ship

The best party of Carnevale 2022 was Tricia’s Pirates and Mermaids Party on a historical ship that sailed around the lagoon all night! It was a super fun theme in a kick-ass location with awesome people. I didn’t know it would turn out so great, of course, when I was planning my costume, I was

Black & White Edwardian Suit for Carnevale

Posted on June 18, 2022 by Trystan L. Bass
Carnevale 2022 - Edwardian suit

This was not the Edwardian black-and-white stripe suit I planned for Carnevale 2022, but this was the one that turned out pretty damn good in the end. A year before, our group decided to take a walk in Edwardian costumes, preferably in black and white, during Carnevale. So I thought this would finally be the

It’s here, it’s queer! Late mail delivery of my ace/demi stripe silk from @silkbaron!!! My backyard makeover is complete! Added a patio umbrella last weekend & am ready to use the firepit tonight. Coconut bunnies & mango piggies at Peony Seafood Restaurant! Had dim sum with my parents & then we set up the cantilever umbrella on my patio, which was a huge hassle because of filling the giant base with sand. 18th-century but make it goth. I’m incapable of anything else! Another lazy Sunday for these two. I’ve finally got a purple(ish) rose! And lots of pink ones! The pink rose bush is in full sun, while the other is partly shaded. But the hated yellow rose flourished over there so I’m hopeful. Thanks to @the.garden.mamas for planting these beauties! All the other gothy plants seem to be going great too. The chair cushions I made a little while back are finally in place! A friend gave me one of those bat corkscrews! It’s not as quick to use as a regular one, but it sure is cute. Big crowd in SF today! Just a few of the signs I could get pix of.
