18th-Century Levite Gown

For a trip to France in 2025, I wanted a new outfit and was inspired to try the levite style because it’s a little more casual and it just seemed interesting. Also, I was inspired by Kendra’s book and articles she’s written on the topic. I considered draping a pattern based on her work and the pattern in Carolyn’s book. But I hate draping! So I hunted around and found a reasonable pattern to start with from Winego.

I wanted to use stash fabrics and found some pink and burgundy silks that worked together. There’s even some scraps left from my first Venetian gown that was enough for a sash. The only thing I had to buy was some fringe for the end of the sash.

I was inspired by this 1780 fashion plate, which I mocked up in my fabric’s color scheme:

Oh, and there would be skulls too! I had more skull lace leftover from the gothic curiosities outfit, and of course my levite would be a goth levite, between the trim and wearing it over my black chemise gown. It all went together fairly easily.

Though I didn’t get many pix when I wore it at Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte.
